Up till now waze on android auto has been solely relying on gps provided by the phone connected to the android auto system. It looks like only the information displayed on the screen is the one that freezes.
Select the app launcher and select waze say ok google or select the microphone.

I found that if i unlock my phone then all of the sudden my location is found the aa screen updates and i m back on track in route. It looks like only the information displayed on the screen is the one that freezes. There were cries of hallelujah back when waze first made its debut on android auto but now users are reporting issues with the google owned product.
